Tropospheric Response to Stratospheric Variability via Lagged Quantile Regression

نویسندگان

چکیده

Stratospheric variability may affect tropospheric weather on time scales between a few weeks and months, thus providing great potential for sub-seasonal to seasonal forecasts of extremes. Unlike standard linear regression, which is based the conditional mean response variable, lagged quantile regression used here, enables modeling variable's complete distribution. Using ERA5 reanalysis, we explore relation prominent teleconnection indices gridded fields stratosphere during boreal winter various quantiles lags. Significant differences in duration, strength, direction stratosphere-troposphere connection outer compared median are identified. In particular, extremes their polar vortex strength discussed, an outlook given.

Stratospheric variability and tropospheric ozone

[1] Changes in the stratosphere-troposphere exchange (STE) of ozone over the last few decades have altered the tropospheric ozone abundance and are likely to continue doing so in the coming century as climate changes. Combining an updated linearized stratospheric ozone chemistry (Linoz v2) with parameterized polar stratospheric clouds (PSCs) chemistry, a 5-year (2001–2005) sequence of the Europ...

Stratospheric variability and tropospheric annular‐mode timescales

[1] Climate models tend to exhibit much too persistent Southern Annular Mode (SAM) circulation anomalies in summer, compared to observations. Theoretical arguments suggest this bias may lead to an overly strong model response to anthropogenic forcing during this season, which is of interest since the largest observed changes in Southern Hemisphere high‐latitude climate over the last few decades...

Least quantile regression via modern optimization

The MIT Faculty has made this article openly available. Please share how this access benefits you. Your story matters. We address the Least Quantile of Squares (LQS) (and in particular the Least Median of Squares) regression problem using modern optimization methods. We propose a Mixed Integer Optimization (MIO) formulation of the LQS problem which allows us to find a provably global optimal so...

Nonparametric M-quantile Regression via Penalized Splines

Quantile regression investigates the conditional quantile functions of a response variables in terms of a set of covariates. Mquantile regression extends this idea by a “quantile-like” generalization of regression based on influence functions. In this work we extend it to nonparametric regression, in the sense that the M-quantile regression functions do not have to be assumed to be linear, but ...

Contribution of stratospheric ozone to the interannual variability of tropospheric ozone in the northern extratropics

[1] We examined the role of variability in the input of stratospheric ozone on the interannual variability of tropospheric ozone in the northern extratropics using correlations of monthly ozone anomalies for the lower stratosphere and the troposphere. We used output from a multiyear simulation of the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) Chemistry and Transport Model (CTM), and evaluated mode...
